New Ulm Sports Central - Preserving and Sharing New Ulm Area Sports History

Teammates have selected Garrett Fischer as 2009 NUHS Most Valuable Player and recipient of the Dennis Wellmann Memorial Trophy. Wellmann, son of the late Elmer Wellmanns of Hanska and borther of Norma Breu of Searles, was killed in action while serving with the Marines in Vietnam in 1966.
Fischer batted 4.02 and won six of seven games for the 19-6 New Ulm High School Eagles. Batting in 30 runs, he struck out only three times. His slugging average of .805 was aided with six home runs, three triples and six doubles.
The recognition was initiated by Carl L. (Red) Wyczawski who continues to sponsor the event annually. A composite of previous winners and their baseball involvement has been started on an attachment which will be linked to this site. It is a work in progress by Wyczawski and will be updated as the information is organized.
